LG Refrigerator Error Codes — Full List
Er FF / Er F F — Freezer Fan Motor Error
What it means: The freezer fan motor has failed or is blocked.
Symptoms: Freezer not cooling, fridge warm, loud noise from freezer.
Fix: A technician needs to replace the freezer fan motor. Same-day repair in most cases.
Er rF / Er r F — Refrigerator Fan Motor Error
What it means: The refrigerator compartment fan has failed.
Symptoms: Fridge not cooling even though freezer works fine.
Fix: Fan motor replacement required. Do not leave food in the fridge.
CF — Condenser Fan Error
What it means: The condenser fan at the back or bottom has failed.
Symptoms: Fridge and freezer both warming up.
Fix: Technician needed. Condenser fan replacement restores heat removal and cooling performance.
dH — Defrost Heater Error
What it means: The defrost system has failed, causing ice buildup.
Symptoms: Frost on the back wall of the freezer, poor cooling, blocked airflow.
Fix: Defrost heater or sensor replacement is usually required.
1F / IF — Ice Maker Fan Error
What it means: The ice maker fan has failed.
Symptoms: Ice maker not making ice, frost around the ice maker compartment.
Fix: Ice maker fan replacement.
5F / SF — Ice Maker Sensor Error
What it means: Temperature sensor near the ice maker has failed.
Fix: Sensor replacement — typically a quick repair once the correct LG part is identified.
CL — Child Lock Active (Not an Error)
What it means: Control panel is locked.
Fix: Hold the Lock button for 3 seconds to unlock.
OF OF — Demo Mode Active (Not an Error)
What it means: Refrigerator is in showroom mode and cooling is off.
Fix: Hold the Refrigerator and Ice Plus buttons together for 5 seconds.
LG Linear Compressor Failure
If your LG refrigerator is from 2016-2021 and completely stopped cooling with no error code displayed, you may have a linear compressor failure. This is a known issue with certain LG models.
Signs: Fridge and freezer both warm, clicking sound from compressor, no error code showing.
This requires a compressor replacement — call a certified technician. Express Xpert technicians are trained on LG linear compressor repair and carry these parts in South Florida. If you need direct service, start with our refrigerator repair page.
When to Call a Technician
Call immediately if:
- Er FF or Er rF is showing — food will spoil within hours
- Compressor clicking with no cooling — possible compressor failure
- Any 5-series error is showing — sensor failures can cascade into cooling instability

Extended LG Refrigerator Error Code Reference
LG refrigerators display error codes on their front panel using Er followed by a letter or letter combination. Er F means the freezer fan (evaporator fan) has failed or is obstructed by ice buildup — one of the most common LG repair calls. Er rF indicates the refrigerator section fan has failed. Er dH is a defrost heater error, meaning the automatic defrost cycle is not completing. Er CO stands for communication error between the main control board and the display board. Er rt means the refrigerant thermistor has failed, giving the control board inaccurate temperature readings that affect the cooling cycle timing. Er 1F and Er 2F on dual-evaporator LG models refer to the ice maker fan and the freezer fan respectively, allowing the diagnostic to distinguish between the two fan circuits.
How to Enter LG Tech Service Mode
LG refrigerators have a service mode that displays stored error codes in sequence. To enter it on most models with a display panel, press and hold the Refrigerator and Ice Plus buttons simultaneously for five seconds. The display will cycle through any stored error codes. Some LG models use the Freezer and Ice Plus combination instead. Once you have cycled through all stored codes, hold the same button combination again for five seconds to exit service mode. The display returns to normal temperature readout after exit. On LG models without button panels, service mode is not accessible from the front panel and a technician visit is required for code retrieval.
When Multiple LG Error Codes Appear Simultaneously
When two or more error codes appear at the same time on an LG refrigerator, the relationship between them usually reveals the root cause. Er F and Er dH appearing together is a strong indicator of a defrost failure that caused ice to accumulate around the evaporator fan — fix the defrost system first and the fan code often clears on its own once the ice melts. Er CO alongside any other code usually means the main board is not communicating correctly with a sensor or component that is otherwise functioning — intermittent wiring, a loose harness connector, or a board communication fault is the likely cause. If Er CO appears alone and then clears, a brief power fluctuation may have disrupted communication temporarily.
