Frigidaire Ice Maker Not Working? Fix It Step by Step

Frigidaire ice maker not working? Step-by-step troubleshooting guide to fix your Frigidaire refrigerator ice maker. DIY fixes + when to call a pro.

Common Frigidaire Ice Maker Problems

Frigidaire refrigerators use two main types of ice makers β€” a standard crescent-shape ice maker and (in newer models) a twist-tray style. Both can fail for similar reasons: frozen fill tubes, faulty water valves, and worn-out ice maker modules. Frigidaire ice makers are generally more reliable than Samsung models, but they still develop issues β€” particularly after 3–5 years of use.

If your entire refrigerator isn't cooling properly, address that first with our refrigerator not cooling guide before troubleshooting the ice maker.

Fix 1: Check the Ice Maker On/Off Switch

Frigidaire ice makers have a physical on/off switch β€” a wire arm that must be in the DOWN position for the ice maker to operate. On gallery and professional series models, there may be a button on the control panel instead. Make sure the ice maker is actually turned on before doing anything else. This seems obvious, but the arm can get bumped accidentally when removing the ice bin.

Fix 2: Thaw a Frozen Fill Tube

The fill tube that delivers water to the ice mold is the most common failure point. To check, remove the ice maker (usually 2–3 screws) and look at the fill tube opening in the back wall. If it's covered in ice, that's your problem. Unplug the fridge and use a hair dryer to thaw it. A frozen fill tube usually indicates a deeper defrost issue β€” the defrost timer, defrost heater, or defrost thermostat may be failing.

Fix 3: Test and Replace the Water Inlet Valve

The water inlet valve on Frigidaire refrigerators is located at the back of the unit, at the bottom. It requires at least 20 PSI to function. If you have low water pressure in your home, the valve may not open enough to fill the ice maker. Test by disconnecting the water supply line and checking flow. A replacement valve runs $20–$50.

Fix 4: Replace the Ice Maker Module

If water is reaching the ice maker but ice isn't being produced or ejected, the ice maker module has likely failed. Frigidaire ice maker assemblies cost $60–$150. Replacement is typically straightforward β€” unplug the fridge, remove 2–4 mounting screws, disconnect the wire harness, and install the new unit. Frigidaire markets refrigerators across two main tiers that South Florida homeowners encounter most frequently. The Frigidaire Gallery series is the mid-range product line sold through most major appliance retailers, featuring standard crescent-shape ice makers in the traditional vertical configuration inside the freezer section. The Frigidaire Professional series includes larger, more feature-rich models with enhanced insulation, better door seals, and in some configurations, a dual-evaporator system that separates refrigerator and freezer air circulation. Ice maker failures on Gallery series models most commonly trace to the fill tube, water inlet valve, or a worn ice maker module in units over five years old. Professional series models are less commonly serviced in South Florida because they represent a smaller portion of installed units, but when they do fail, labor cost is typically 20 to 30 percent higher than on standard Gallery units.

Twist-Tray vs Crescent Ice Maker: Which Type Do You Have

Frigidaire uses two distinctly different ice maker designs depending on the model year and product tier. The traditional crescent ice maker β€” found in most Gallery and standard Frigidaire models β€” uses a heated ice mold tray and a rotating ejector arm that pushes crescent-shaped cubes out of the mold when the ice-maker thermostat detects that the mold has reached the ejection temperature. The twist-tray ice maker β€” introduced in some newer Frigidaire models β€” uses a flexible tray that twists to eject ice rather than a heated mold. Twist-tray units are quieter and use less energy, but they are more sensitive to freezer temperature fluctuations and can fail to eject if the freezer temperature drifts above approximately 5Β°F, which is a common cause of no-ice complaints on these models in homes where the freezer thermostat has drifted over time.

Frigidaire Water Filter Replacement and Ice Maker Performance

Frigidaire recommends replacing the water filter every six months or after 200 gallons of water use, whichever comes first. In South Florida's hard water environment, filter lifespan is often shorter because the filter media saturates with mineral content faster than in soft-water areas. A filter that is eight to ten months old in South Florida may be restricting flow as much as one that is fourteen months old in a soft-water city. Using a genuine Frigidaire filter or a certified equivalent is important β€” third-party filters vary widely in their actual flow rate under pressure, and some restrict flow enough to prevent the ice maker from filling completely. If you replaced the filter recently and ice production has not resumed, testing with a different brand of certified-replacement filter eliminates filter quality as a variable before moving to the water inlet valve.
